**Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu – April 28, 2025** – A large-scale vaccination drive targeting goats and sheep has been launched in Tirunelveli district to combat the Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) virus. Tirunelveli District Collector R. Sukumar inaugurated the campaign on Monday, administering vaccines to over 200 animals at Kulavanigarpuram in Palayamkottai.
The Collector emphasized the importance of the vaccination, explaining that the PPR virus causes fever, mouth ulcers, fatigue, and loss of appetite in infected animals, ultimately leading to their inability to consume fodder. The vaccination protects four-year-old sheep and goats from the disease.
The district administration aims to vaccinate over 60,500 sheep and goats by May 27th through a series of vaccination camps held across the district’s veterinary clinics. The initiative underscores a significant effort to protect livestock and the livelihoods of farmers and shepherds in the region.
