Sun Apr 27 16:58:58 UTC 2025: ## Andhra Pradesh Tribals Boost Incomes with Scientific Beekeeping

**VISAKHAPATNAM, Andhra Pradesh – April 27, 2025** – A project in Alluri Sitharama Raju district is empowering Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs) through scientific beekeeping, significantly increasing their income. Over 30 hamlets are participating, with training provided by GITAM Deemed-to-be University’s Science Technology and Innovation Hubs (STI Hubs), supported by the Department of Science and Technology (DST).

The initiative focuses on producing monofloral honey, sourced from a single plant species. Around 100 acres have been planted with niger (valisalu), and approximately 250 bee boxes have been strategically placed. This method yields at least five to seven tonnes of honey per season.

Participants, previously relying on traditional methods, are now learning modern techniques, resulting in annual incomes exceeding ₹1 lakh per farmer. The project’s principal investigator, I. Sarat Babu, highlighted the success, stating that the team dedicates considerable time to mentoring the tribal beekeepers.

The next phase involves promoting, branding, and marketing the honey with the assistance of NABARD and the Integrated Tribal Development Agency (ITDA). The project exemplifies the use of science and technology to improve the socio-economic conditions of underprivileged communities.
