**Hyderabad, April 28, 2025** – Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy is exploring options for a ceasefire in the ongoing “Operation Kagar” against Maoist rebels. Following a meeting with a Peace Committee urging a halt to the operation, Reddy consulted with senior Congress leader K Jana Reddy, who led successful peace talks with the People’s War Group (PWG, now Maoists) in 2004.
The Peace Committee, citing the large number of Maoists currently surrounded at Karregutta on the Telangana-Chhattisgarh border, pressed for negotiations with the Union Government. Reddy acknowledged the Congress party’s historical approach to the Naxalite issue as both a law and order and a social problem, indicating that a decision on the ceasefire will follow internal party discussions and consultation with the high command. He also stated that the government’s position will be revealed after discussions with cabinet colleagues. Government advisor K Keshava Rao will assist in these deliberations.
Adding to the pressure for peace talks, Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) chief and former Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao also unexpectedly called for negotiations at a public meeting on Sunday. This surprising demand has sparked discussion within the BRS.
Meanwhile, civil rights groups continue to oppose Operation Kagar, and a recent letter from Maoists suggests that surrenders do not represent a complete resolution to the conflict. A peace rally was also held in Khammam demanding an immediate halt to the operation. The situation remains tense as the Telangana government weighs its options.
