Mon Apr 28 09:22:38 UTC 2025: ## Tamil Nadu to Name Chief Minister Stalin Chancellor of New University
**Chennai, April 28, 2025** – The Tamil Nadu government has proposed to appoint Chief Minister M.K. Stalin as the Chancellor of the upcoming Kalaignar University in Kumbakonam. A bill to this effect was introduced in the Assembly today by Higher Education Minister Govi. Chezhiaan. The bill also designates the Higher Education Minister as Pro-Chancellor. The Chancellor will appoint the Vice-Chancellor from a shortlist of three candidates recommended by a selection committee.
The new university will be created by splitting Bharathidasan University, addressing concerns about the latter’s capacity to serve students, particularly in coastal areas. Kalaignar University will focus on providing world-class facilities and uplifting marginalized communities in Ariyalur, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, and Tiruvarur districts.
