**NEW DELHI, April 29, 2025** – India’s military expenditure in 2024 was nearly nine times that of Pakistan’s, according to a new report from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI). The stark difference highlights the growing military disparity between the two nations, particularly amid heightened tensions following the Pahalgam terror attack.
SIPRI’s report, released Monday, reveals India spent $86.1 billion on its military in 2024, a 1.6% increase from the previous year. This places India as the fifth largest military spender globally. In contrast, Pakistan’s military expenditure totaled $10.2 billion.
The report also notes significant increases in military spending across the globe. China’s military budget rose by 7% to $314 billion, representing three decades of consecutive growth and accounting for half of all military spending in Asia and Oceania. Europe, driven largely by the ongoing war in Ukraine, saw a 17% increase, exceeding Cold War levels. Russia’s military spending surged by 38% to $149 billion, while Ukraine’s reached $64.7 billion, representing a significant portion of its GDP. Germany and Poland also saw substantial increases in their military budgets.
The top five global military spenders – the United States, China, Russia, Germany, and India – accounted for 60% of global military expenditure, totaling $1.635 trillion. The report highlights the escalating global arms race and its implications for international security.
