**GURUGRAM, Haryana, April 28, 2025** – A massive fire at the Bandhwari landfill site in Gurugram, Haryana, raged for over 20 hours before being brought under control on Sunday evening. Firefighters from Gurugram, Faridabad, and Palwal battled the blaze, using 16 fire tenders to extinguish the flames. The fire, which started late Saturday evening, is believed to have been sparked by a nearby forest fire that spread to the over 1.1 million metric tons of unprocessed waste at the landfill.
The incident has raised serious concerns about waste management practices in the region. Approximately 2,000 metric tons of municipal waste from Gurugram and Faridabad are deposited at the landfill daily. Environmental analyst Chetan Agarwal highlighted the frequency of fires in the Aravali region, attributing the susceptibility to dry conditions and the presence of flammable lantana plants.
Social activist Tarun Chopra voiced his concern on social media, citing the detrimental impact of the frequent fires on air quality and the health of nearby residents. He criticized the landfill as a “nightmare,” causing toxic fumes and smoke pollution.
The fire occurred hours after a visit by Urban Local Bodies Minister Vipul Goel, who had instructed officials to expedite waste disposal. The National Green Tribunal had previously reprimanded the Gurugram and Faridabad municipal corporations on April 23 for inadequate waste management at the site. Cooling operations are still underway at the landfill.
