Mon Apr 28 14:10:00 UTC 2025: **REAL ID Deadline Looms: Kentucky Seeks Extension, Federal Government Remains Firm**
WASHINGTON, D.C. – With the May 7 deadline for REAL ID-compliant identification for air travel fast approaching, concerns are mounting among lawmakers and travelers. Kentucky has formally requested an extension, citing logistical challenges and low compliance rates, but the federal government has refused, confirming that the deadline will be enforced.
The Trump administration rejected a plea from Kentucky’s Senate Transportation Committee Chair Jimmy Higdon and 27 other state senators, who argued that many residents, particularly in rural areas, are still unable to obtain REAL ID-compliant driver’s licenses due to limited DMV appointment availability and long wait times. Senator Higdon stated the request was to “protect Kentuckians from bureaucratic burdens,” noting that only about 40% of the state’s residents currently possess a REAL ID.
Concerns are not limited to Kentucky. Senator Jack Reed (D-RI) also expressed worry about potential delays at TSA checkpoints due to the anticipated number of non-compliant travelers. He noted that an estimated 20% of air travelers currently use non-compliant identification.
A TSA spokesperson stated that non-compliant passengers should expect delays and additional screening measures. They added that the only exception for those without a REAL ID would be for individuals self-deporting.
The REAL ID Act, passed in 2005, has faced significant opposition from states and advocacy groups over concerns about costs, states’ rights, and privacy. The ACLU, for instance, has labeled the act as discriminatory and burdensome. Despite repeated delays and implementation challenges over the past two decades, the federal government maintains its commitment to enforcing the May 7 deadline. Travelers are urged to verify their identification complies with REAL ID requirements or to obtain an alternative acceptable form of identification, such as a passport or military ID, before traveling by air.
