**Chicago, IL** – The Chicago Cubs continued their impressive start to the season with a 4-0 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday, improving their record to 17-10. Despite the win, and the stellar performance of rookie Pete Crow-Armstrong, manager Craig Counsell remains hesitant to alter the team’s successful lineup.
Crow-Armstrong, currently batting in the middle of the order, has been a standout performer, posting a 1.9 WAR – third in the majors – and achieving a historic feat by recording five home runs, 10 stolen bases, and 15 extra-base hits before the end of April. While he’s expressed interest in eventually leading off, Counsell believes the current batting order is working optimally, citing the team’s high level of execution and the advantageous matchups it creates for players like Crow-Armstrong and Seiya Suzuki.
“I think our lineup is executing at a really high level right now,” Counsell stated. He emphasized the importance of player performance over batting order placement.
Crow-Armstrong contributed two stolen bases in Friday’s game, showcasing his speed and skill. The Cubs’ offense as a whole was potent, accumulating 11 hits and three stolen bases. Colin Rea earned his first win as a Cub, pitching five shutout innings.
However, the team faces concerns regarding its pitching rotation. Javier Assad was shut down at Triple-A Iowa with a Grade 2 left oblique strain, further depleting the rotation after Justin Steele’s season-ending elbow surgery. Counsell acknowledged the need to find additional starting pitching depth.
Closer Ryan Pressly, dealing with a lingering right knee issue, received another day of rest. While his status remains uncertain, Counsell downplayed the severity of the injury, attributing it to the normal wear and tear experienced by a 37-year-old relief pitcher.
Despite these concerns, the Cubs remain in first place in the NL Central, 3.5 games ahead of the Milwaukee Brewers. Crow-Armstrong’s popularity with fans also continues to grow, drawing comparisons to Sammy Sosa in his enthusiasm for connecting with the crowd. The Cubs will look to continue their winning streak on Saturday.
