**New Delhi, April 28, 2025** – Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced on Sunday that the government will conduct a survey of cow shelters and provide financial assistance to address the growing problem of stray cows on the city’s roads. The initiative follows a significant number of complaints regarding traffic disruptions and accidents involving stray animals.
Ms. Gupta, speaking at a religious gathering, expressed concern over the plight of cows roaming the streets, often in search of food after being milked. She stated that ₹1,200 crore has been allocated for improving rural roads and drainage systems. Furthermore, the BJP government plans to introduce legislation to protect stray cows, an announcement made during the presentation of the Delhi budget last month.
Data from Delhi police reveals a substantial number of complaints: between January 1st and February 19th, 25,393 incidents involving stray cows were reported, mainly concerning traffic congestion and accidents. The government’s planned survey and financial support aim to mitigate this issue and improve the welfare of stray cows in the city.
