**NEW DELHI/BEIJING** – China has voiced strong support for Pakistan following a deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam, India, that killed 26 people. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, in a phone call with his Pakistani counterpart Ishaq Dar, urged both India and Pakistan to exercise restraint and called for an impartial investigation into the April 22nd attack, claimed by a Pakistan-based terror group proxy.
The attack has significantly escalated tensions between India and Pakistan. India has responded with punitive measures, including suspending the Indus Waters Treaty and closing the Attari-Wagah border crossing. Pakistan, in turn, closed its airspace to Indian airlines and threatened further action.
Wang emphasized China’s unwavering support for Pakistan’s security interests, describing the country as a “staunch friend and all-weather strategic partner.” He stressed that conflict is not in the interest of either nation or regional stability. Dar, who also serves as Pakistan’s deputy prime minister, briefed Wang on the situation and reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to combating terrorism while managing the crisis maturely. Pakistan rejected India’s actions as “unilateral and illegal.”
India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has also been engaged in diplomatic efforts, speaking with several world leaders, including his British counterpart, to condemn the attack and highlight the need for a zero-tolerance policy towards terrorism. While there has been no immediate official Indian response to the China-Pakistan statement, global condemnation of the attack continues. The situation remains volatile as both nations navigate the escalating crisis.
