Sun Apr 27 07:40:00 UTC 2025: ## Uber Threatens Colorado Exit Over Proposed Rideshare Safety Bill
**Denver, CO** – Ride-sharing giant Uber has threatened to cease operations in Colorado if a new safety bill, HB25-1291, becomes law. The bill, spearheaded by State Representative Jenny Willford following a personal assault, aims to enhance passenger safety through mandatory audio and video recording of rides, stricter background checks for drivers, and improved reporting of violent incidents. It also prohibits drivers from providing passengers with food and drinks.
Uber vehemently opposes the bill, calling it “deeply flawed” and claiming it violates user privacy, imposes undue financial burdens, and offers no demonstrable safety improvements. The company contends that its existing safety features, including an optional in-app recording function and emergency button, are sufficient.
Representative Willford, however, accuses Uber of prioritizing profits over passenger safety, describing the company’s threat to leave Colorado as a “cynical” move. She highlights Uber’s history of insufficient safety measures and points to the bill’s revisions made in response to Uber’s feedback. The bill passed the House earlier this month and is awaiting a Senate hearing before the May 7th legislative session deadline. The outcome will determine whether Uber remains a transportation option in Colorado.
