**Tiruchi, Tamil Nadu, April 27, 2025** – The Chinna Eri lake in Thuraiyur, Tamil Nadu, is suffering severe pollution due to untreated sewage and waste disposal, prompting complaints from residents. The foul odor emanating from the lake, situated near the town’s bus stand, is a major concern. While a new sewage treatment plant (STP) is under construction, a planned lake rejuvenation project remains stalled.
The STP, with a capacity to treat three million liters of sewage daily, is expected to cost ₹9.5 crore and aims to prevent further untreated sewage from flowing into the lake. However, residents like N. Saravanan advocate for immediate measures, suggesting the erection of fences to prevent further dumping of waste into the already polluted water body. The lake, once used for irrigation, is now largely unfit even for this purpose.
Municipal Administration Minister K.N. Nehru previously directed officials to beautify the lake and transform it into a leisure spot. While a proposal for this project has been submitted to the government, it awaits administrative approval. The situation highlights the ongoing challenges faced by Thuraiyur in managing its waste and ensuring the environmental health of its public spaces.
