SAN ANTONIO, TX – The UTSA Roadrunners (31-10, 12-3) dominated the Memphis Tigers (16-25, 4-12) in the opening game of their three-game series Friday night at Roadrunner Field, securing a decisive 12-2 win in just seven innings.

Zach Royse led the pitching charge for UTSA, throwing six strong innings, allowing only four hits and one earned run while striking out nine batters – tying his career high. The Roadrunners’ offense was relentless, with every player recording at least one hit.

Memphis struck first with a solo home run in the second inning, but UTSA quickly responded. A series of hits and strategic base running, highlighted by a three-run third inning that included a sacrifice fly by Norris McClure and an RBI single by Mason Lytle, put the Roadrunners in the lead.

The scoring continued in the fifth inning with a three-run blast by James Taussig, his fifth home run of the season, extending UTSA’s lead to 6-1. Further scoring in the fifth, from a double by Caden Miller and a single by Jordan Ballin, widened the gap to 8-1.

The Roadrunners then exploded in the sixth inning with a grand slam by Ty Hodge, his fourth homer of the year and the sixth grand slam for UTSA this season. This surge put the game out of reach, leading to a mercy rule victory for UTSA in the seventh inning. Memphis managed to add one more run, but it was too little, too late.

Several Roadrunners had standout performances: Lytle recorded his 22nd multi-hit game, Stucky his 12th, Taussig his 10th multi-RBI game (with four RBIs), and Hodge had two hits and four RBIs in his 13th multi-hit and fourth multi-RBI game of the season.

The win extends UTSA’s perfect record to 10-0 when holding opponents to two runs or less and 18-0 when scoring ten or more runs. The Roadrunners improved their record to 13-4 when their opponent scores first. The series continues Saturday with game two.
