Sun Apr 27 08:10:37 UTC 2025: ## Titanic Survivor’s Pre-Disaster Letter Sells for $399,000 at Auction

**London, April 27, 2025** – A letter penned by Titanic survivor Archibald Gracie aboard the ill-fated ship just days before it sank has sold at auction for £300,000 ($399,000). Written on April 10, 1912, to the seller’s great-uncle, the letter provides a fascinating glimpse into the mindset of a first-class passenger before the tragedy. Gracie’s understated comment, “It is a fine ship but I shall await my journeys end before I pass judgment on her,” is now chillingly prophetic.

The letter, sold to a US private collector by Henry Aldridge & Son auction house in Wiltshire, England, far exceeded its estimated price of £60,000. Auctioneer Andrew Aldridge called it an “exceptional museum grade piece,” noting it’s believed to be the only surviving letter written by Gracie from aboard the Titanic.

Gracie, who survived by jumping ship and reaching a collapsible boat, later wrote a detailed account of the disaster, “The Truth about the Titanic.” His firsthand experience, coupled with the pre-disaster letter, offers invaluable historical insight into the events leading up to the sinking. Sadly, Gracie succumbed to complications from hypothermia and diabetes later that year. The letter, postmarked from Queenstown, Ireland, stands as a poignant reminder of the Titanic’s ill-fated maiden voyage.
