**THANJAVUR, Tamil Nadu –** A new university named after former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi will begin operations in Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu, in June 2025, Higher Education Minister Govi. Chezhiaan announced Sunday. The university’s launch comes amidst an ongoing dispute between the state government and Governor R.N. Ravi regarding the appointment of Vice-Chancellors.

Minister Chezhiaan reiterated the Supreme Court’s ruling that the Governor lacks the authority to appoint VCs, criticizing the Governor’s actions and the recent boycott by VCs of a meeting convened by him. He dismissed recent criticism of the DMK from the TVK leader Vijay, asserting the DMK’s continued electoral dominance in the state.

In other news from the region, Minister Chezhiaan inaugurated two new extended bus routes by the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) in Kumbakonam, aimed at improving connectivity in the area. The new routes are A49 (Kumbakonam–Kudavasal via Enanallur) and 16B (Mayiladuthurai–Thirupanandal via Thiruloki).
