**Chennai, India (April 27, 2025)** – A webinar hosted by Shiv Nadar University (SNU) Chennai and The Hindu highlighted a significant projected shortage of chartered accountants (CAs) in India, coinciding with the nation’s rapid economic growth. Experts predict a need for at least 30 lakh CAs by 2047, a stark contrast to the current number of 4,09,000 practicing professionals.
Ramanathan Krishnan of SNU emphasized the expanding opportunities, stating that India’s economic growth from a $4 trillion to a projected $30 trillion economy will fuel this demand. He acknowledged the challenges of the rigorous CA exam, which boasts a low pass rate of 10-15%, and the need for improved learning experiences in undergraduate commerce programs to address this.
Chella Krishna G. of SRSV and Associates underscored the evolving role of CAs, moving beyond traditional accounting tasks to encompass business advisory, risk management, and strategic financial planning. He urged aspiring CAs to embrace continuous learning and develop strong communication and analytical skills. Both experts stressed the importance of an aptitude for learning and problem-solving, adding that bridge courses are available to support students with math anxieties.
The webinar, part of The Hindu’s Career Counselling series, is now available online. The significant projected shortage underscores the burgeoning career prospects for aspiring chartered accountants in India’s rapidly growing economy.
