**New Delhi, April 27, 2025** – India has achieved a remarkable 93% immunization coverage, a testament to government leadership and the dedication of its healthcare system. However, the remaining 7%—mostly from marginalized communities—presents a significant challenge. These groups face barriers including vaccine hesitancy, misinformation, and limited access to healthcare services, particularly migrant and tribal populations in remote areas.
To address this, India is employing several strategies. Initiatives like Mission Indradhanush and Intensified Mission Indradhanush are already working to reach underserved populations. A new program, the Community of Practice for Demand (CoP-D), is collaborating with the UNDP, UNICEF, GAVI, and other partners to engage communities directly, raise awareness, and tailor solutions to overcome vaccine hesitancy. CoP-D will work closely with frontline health workers (ASHAs) and leverage community leaders to increase vaccination uptake.
Technological advancements also play a crucial role. The Electronic Vaccine Intelligence Network (eVIN) has revolutionized vaccine tracking and distribution, ensuring adequate vaccine stock levels and improving monitoring. Since its 2015 launch, eVIN has expanded nationwide, saving millions of vaccine doses and significantly improving efficiency. It is now being integrated with U-WIN (Universal Immunisation Programme-WIN) to create a comprehensive digital system for managing all aspects of immunization.
Launched in 2024, U-WIN allows parents to book appointments, receive reminders, and access digital vaccination certificates. It has already registered tens of millions of children and pregnant women and tracked hundreds of millions of vaccine doses, demonstrating its effectiveness and public trust. Robust security measures protect beneficiary data privacy.
While significant progress has been made, closing the remaining 7% gap requires sustained political commitment, community engagement, and ongoing innovation in both outreach and technology. The success of eVIN and U-WIN showcases India’s commitment to leveraging technology for improved public health outcomes, setting a potential global standard for vaccine management.
