Sun Apr 27 08:19:32 UTC 2025: ## Bizarre “Bone Collector” Caterpillar Discovered in Hawaii

**HONOLULU, HAWAII –** Scientists have discovered a new species of carnivorous caterpillar in Hawaii, dubbed the “bone collector” for its unusual habit of decorating its protective silk case with the remains of its prey. This unique insect, found only on the island of Oahu, preys on insects trapped in spider webs, then adorns its casing with the victims’ body parts – including ant heads and fly wings.

According to researchers at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, the caterpillar’s unusual behavior may serve as camouflage, allowing it to feed undetected within the spider’s web. While other predatory caterpillars exist, the bone collector’s behavior is unprecedented. “It really is an astonishing type,” commented Steven Montgomery, an entomology consultant not involved in the study, published in the journal *Science* on April 24th.

The discovery is particularly significant due to the rarity of predatory caterpillars. Researchers have only found 62 bone collectors over two decades of observation. Adding to its intrigue, these caterpillars are even cannibalistic, with individuals preying on each other. Genetic analysis suggests the bone collector’s lineage dates back at least 6 million years, predating the formation of the Hawaiian Islands themselves. Currently, this ancient creature inhabits an isolated mountain forest alongside several invasive species. The research highlights the unique biodiversity still being discovered in Hawaii and underscores the importance of conservation efforts.
