**Patna, Bihar, April 27, 2025** – Bihar, a state not traditionally known for its sporting prowess, is experiencing a remarkable rise in Sepak Takraw, a Southeast Asian sport combining elements of volleyball, badminton, and martial arts. Fueled by recent international success and government support, the state is rapidly developing a thriving Sepak Takraw scene, transforming the lives of many young athletes from humble backgrounds.
Last month, Bihar hosted the ISTAF World Cup, where the men’s team secured a historic gold medal, their first-ever at this level. This victory, coupled with increased government investment in sports, has ignited a passion for the sport among Bihar’s youth. The state now boasts a national-level Sepak Takraw team, with six players currently competing internationally. A new international academy is planned, mirroring successful models in Thailand.
The transformation is evident in the dedication of young players like Sahil Kumar and Aarti Kumari, both 16, who train rigorously at Patna’s Patliputra Indoor Stadium. They represent the growing number of athletes drawn to Sepak Takraw, attracted by its accessibility and the promise of a career path, especially due to a government scheme guaranteeing jobs to medal-winning athletes. The “Medal Lao Nauki Pao” (Bring home a medal; get a job) initiative has already provided government positions to 71 athletes.
The sport’s growing popularity is also reflected in the upcoming Khelo India Youth Games, where 18 Bihar players will compete. Their coach, Pankaj Kumar Ranjan, attributes the state’s success to increased investment, talent scouting programs, and the creation of a supportive sports ecosystem.
This remarkable success story isn’t limited to individual players; it underscores a broader shift in Bihar’s approach to sports. The establishment of the Bihar State Sports Authority (BSSA) in 2023, along with a significant increase in sports funding, has created a favorable environment for athletes. Bihar is now actively hosting various sporting events, including the upcoming Khelo India Para Games and the Women’s Kabaddi World Cup, further cementing its commitment to sports development. The meteoric rise of Sepak Takraw in Bihar serves as a testament to the transformative power of focused investment and a supportive sporting environment.
