Sun Apr 27 10:26:37 UTC 2025: ## Indian Trade Unions Call for Nationwide Strike Against Labour Codes

**Visakhapatnam, April 27, 2025** – All Party trade unions in India have issued a call for a nationwide strike on May 20th, protesting the Modi government’s four new labour codes. A seminar held in Visakhapatnam on Sunday condemned the codes, claiming they weaken workers’ rights and benefit corporations.

Speakers at the seminar, including representatives from various trade union federations, alleged that the codes, consolidating 29 of 44 existing labour laws, will strip workers of key rights such as the right to strike, form unions, negotiate wages, and access minimum wages, provident funds (PF), and Employees’ State Insurance (ESI). They further criticized the government’s policies, blaming them for rising unemployment over the past 11 years.

The unions argue the new codes undermine hard-won worker protections achieved during the British era and urged the public to support the May 20th strike to oppose what they call “anti-worker” and “anti-people” policies.
