Sun Apr 27 01:00:00 UTC 2025: ## India Faces Divided Weather: Heatwave in Some Areas, Pre-Monsoon Rains in Others

**NEW DELHI** – India is experiencing a stark contrast in weather conditions, with a heatwave scorching parts of the country while pre-monsoon rains bring relief to others. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast rain and thunderstorms across several regions.

Eastern India, including Bihar, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, eastern Madhya Pradesh, and the northeastern states, are expected to experience rainfall, potentially accompanied by strong winds. However, the IMD has also issued thunderstorm warnings for some areas. This duality was evident on Saturday night, with light showers reported in parts of North-West Bengal and Odisha, while a Kolkata-based cricket match was called off due to heavy rain. Bihar, Jharkhand, and Chhattisgarh are particularly at risk of severe weather disruptions today.

The IMD has specifically warned of strong winds, lightning, and heavy rainfall in several districts of Bihar, alongside heatwave alerts in other areas. Meanwhile, western India continues to grapple with a heatwave, with heatwave alerts in place for several regions. However, strong winds are also predicted for parts of Northwest India, including Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Uttarakhand, and Himachal Pradesh, which may bring some respite from the intense heat. Delhi recorded maximum temperatures between 41-43°C on Saturday, while Vidarbha in Maharashtra reached a scorching 45°C.

The IMD attributes the pre-monsoon rainfall in many regions to the Kalbaisakhi phenomenon. Strong westerly winds are expected to bring heavy rain and thunderstorms to North Bengal, including Kolkata, for the next 48 hours. Heatwave warnings are also in effect for some districts. The impact of this weather system is also expected to be felt in Sikkim, Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha.

Southern India is also forecast to experience severe weather, with strong winds (up to 50-60 km/h), lightning, and thunderstorms expected in Karnataka, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Rayalaseema, Kerala, Mahe, and Tamil Nadu over the next seven days. Heavy rainfall is possible in certain areas.

Regarding temperature forecasts, the IMD predicts no significant change in temperatures for Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and Rajasthan for the next two days, followed by a slight increase and subsequent decrease. Uttar Pradesh is expected to see a 2-3°C temperature drop over the next seven days. Eastern India will see a 2-3°C drop in temperature over the next 24-48 hours. However, temperatures are expected to rise in Gujarat and central India.
