Sun Apr 27 01:00:00 UTC 2025: ## Andhra Pradesh Braces for Severe Heatwave; Temperatures to Soar 4 Degrees Above Normal
**Amaravati, Andhra Pradesh:** The Andhra Pradesh Meteorological Department has issued a warning of a severe heatwave this summer, with temperatures expected to be up to 4 degrees Celsius higher than normal. Temperatures are already reaching 44 degrees Celsius in many parts of the state, and are predicted to climb as high as 47 degrees Celsius in May, according to the state’s Disaster Management Agency.
While the state government has issued warnings, concerns are rising about the lack of concrete on-the-ground action plans to mitigate the impact of the extreme heat. The heatwave poses serious risks, including dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke.
**Government urged to take swift action:** Experts are urging the government to take immediate action to protect citizens. This includes issuing more precise heat alerts in collaboration with the Indian Meteorological Department, ensuring widespread dissemination of warnings across all communities, and providing readily accessible drinking water at public places such as bus stops and auto stands.
The construction of permanent shaded areas like cool roof bus stands and sheds is also recommended, along with the establishment of heatstroke units in hospitals and the provision of ORS, IV fluids, and emergency beds in health centers. Adjustments to school timings, particularly the avoidance of outdoor classes between 12 pm and 4 pm, and school closures during heat alerts are strongly suggested.
**Recommendations for public safety:** The public is advised to minimize outdoor exposure, especially between 12 pm and 4 pm. When venturing out, it’s recommended to wear light-colored clothing and head coverings. Individuals should also increase their water intake to at least 3-4 liters daily, prioritizing fluids like coconut water, buttermilk, and lemon juice. A balanced diet, focusing on light meals and avoiding spicy food and dry foods, is also crucial. Special care should be taken for children and the elderly, who should remain indoors during peak heat hours.
The state’s Disaster Management Agency Director, Ronanki Kurmanath, acknowledged the anticipated intense heat and stated that the agency is taking necessary steps in coordination with various departments. However, the lack of visible action on the ground leaves many concerned about the preparedness of the state to deal with the impending heatwave. The most vulnerable districts identified are Kurnool, Nandyal, Anantapur, Alluri Sitarama Raju, Anakapalli, Guntur, Krishna, and NTR.
