**CHENNAI, INDIA (April 26, 2025)** – A Chennai-based interior design professor, Karthiga T, has created a powerful art installation titled “Coastal Cry in Plastic,” constructed entirely from plastic waste collected from Marina and Besant Nagar beaches. The mural, a statue of a pregnant woman weighing approximately 20 kilograms, serves as a poignant commentary on environmental degradation and irresponsible consumption.

Inspired by the sight of a beach littered with plastic debris, Prof. T, along with her students, spent a month collecting and sorting the waste. After separating recyclable materials and sending the rest for recycling, she dedicated her spare time over the following month to crafting the mural at home. Using eco-friendly paints, she assembled the artwork from plastic bottles, bags, caps, wires, and other discarded items.

The completed mural, installed at the Government College of Fine Arts in Chennai, depicts a pregnant woman as a metaphor for Mother Earth, burdened by the weight of human waste. Prof. T hopes the artwork will spark conversations about sustainable practices and inspire other artists to adopt environmentally conscious approaches in their work. The project represents a powerful blend of art and activism, raising awareness about the pressing issue of plastic pollution and its impact on the environment.
