Sat Apr 26 08:09:14 UTC 2025: ## Tamil Nadu to Amend 1982 Act to Combat Economic Offenses and Biomedical Waste Issues

**Chennai, April 26, 2025** – The Tamil Nadu Assembly today introduced a Bill to amend the state’s 1982 Act aimed at curbing the activities of various offenders, including those involved in economic crimes and biomedical waste violations. The amendment, introduced by Law Minister S. Regupathy, follows a 2024-25 announcement by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin.

The Bill addresses concerns highlighted by the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court regarding the inadequate enforcement of Biomedical Waste Management Rules, 2016. It emphasizes the serious public health and environmental risks posed by improper biomedical waste disposal, including the illegal dumping of such waste from neighboring states.

The amendments also account for the recent repeal and reenactment of the Indian Penal Code and the Code of Criminal Procedure as the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, respectively. While Electricity, Prohibition and Excise Minister V. Senthilbalaji was present, the Bill was introduced by the Law Minister. The updated legislation aims to strengthen the state’s ability to prosecute economic offenders and ensure effective management of biomedical waste.
