Sat Apr 26 02:40:00 UTC 2025: ## Seahawks Open to Trading Backup Quarterback Sam Howell

**Seattle, WA** – The Seattle Seahawks are exploring trade options for backup quarterback Sam Howell, according to sources. This comes after the team added Drew Lock last week, creating a surplus at the quarterback position. The Seahawks currently have four quarterbacks on their roster: Geno Smith (starter), Sam Darnold (backup), Sam Howell, and Jaren Hall.

General Manager John Schneider confirmed the team’s willingness to consider offers for Howell, stating that Howell and Lock will compete for the backup role behind Darnold. While the Seahawks previously maintained only two quarterbacks on their roster, the addition of Lock and the presence of Hall has led to a potential logjam.

Schneider defended Howell’s performance last season, attributing his struggles in part to learning a new system and being thrust into a difficult situation late in a game against the Green Bay Packers. He highlighted Howell’s mobility as a potential asset in the Seahawks’ new offensive system. Despite Howell’s difficult 2023 season with the Washington Commanders (where he threw for 3,946 yards, 21 touchdowns, and a league-high 21 interceptions), Schneider expressed confidence in his potential.

The Seahawks acquired Howell last March from Washington in a trade, giving up draft picks to secure his services. The addition of Lock, on a two-year, $5 million contract, doesn’t preclude Seattle from drafting another quarterback, Schneider added. The team appears ready to let competition determine the fate of their backup quarterback position.
