**New Delhi, April 26, 2025** – Doctors at Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi have achieved a medical breakthrough, successfully removing what is believed to be the world’s largest adrenal tumor ever extracted using robotic surgery. The massive tumor, measuring 18.2 x 13.5 cm, was removed from a 36-year-old woman in a complex, minimally invasive procedure.
The surgery, performed using the Da Vinci surgical robot, presented significant challenges due to the tumor’s size and its proximity to the Inferior Vena Cava, liver, and right kidney. The robotic system’s three-dimensional view and precise robotic arms allowed surgeons to navigate the intricate procedure with greater control and accuracy than traditional methods would have allowed.
According to Dr. Sandeep Bansal, Medical Superintendent of Safdarjung Hospital, the robotic approach was crucial in minimizing invasiveness. A traditional open surgery would have required a 20cm incision and a much longer recovery period. The robotic procedure lasted over three hours, and the patient recovered remarkably well, being discharged just three days later.
The successful surgery highlights the growing potential of robotic surgery for complex procedures, offering benefits such as smaller incisions, reduced pain, faster recovery times, and a quicker return to normal activities.
