MYRTLE BEACH, SC – The family of Scott Spivey, who was killed in a September 2023 shooting involving North Myrtle Beach restaurant owner Weldon Boyd, is demanding a renewed investigation into the case. The initial investigation, conducted by Horry County Police, concluded with no charges filed against Boyd, citing a lack of evidence. However, the recent resignation of former Horry County Deputy Chief Brandon Strickland, who is under investigation for alleged misconduct, has cast new light on the incident.

WMBF News obtained recordings of phone calls between Boyd and Strickland, who were personal friends, following the shooting. The conversations reveal Strickland’s apparent influence on the investigation, including his contact with the detective assigned to the case and the solicitor. Strickland’s comments suggest he actively worked “in the shadows” to influence the outcome.

Spivey’s family, who filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Boyd, has been joined by Horry County Councilman Johnny Gardner and County Administrator Barry Spivey in calling for a re-opening of the investigation. They sent letters to the State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) chief and Governor Henry McMaster requesting an independent review.

Boyd, in a Facebook post, maintains the shooting was self-defense and says he will cooperate with any further investigation. He has stated he will no longer comment to the media. The family continues to push for a thorough review of all evidence to ensure a fair and impartial investigation into the circumstances surrounding Spivey’s death. The case remains under active review.
