Wed Apr 23 09:37:33 UTC 2025: ## Pope Francis Dies at 88; World Mourns as Vatican Prepares for Papal Election

VATICAN CITY – Pope Francis, the first Latin American pope, passed away on Monday at the age of 88 after suffering a stroke. His body lay in state at St. Peter’s Basilica beginning Wednesday, allowing thousands of mourners to pay their respects before his funeral on Saturday. The basilica was kept open until midnight to accommodate the crowds.

The Pope’s body was solemnly processed from his residence to the basilica, accompanied by cardinals, bishops, and Swiss Guards. The procession followed the same route Pope Francis took on Easter Sunday in what turned out to be his final public appearance. Despite ongoing health issues, he’d surprised everyone by greeting the faithful from his popemobile.

His funeral, scheduled for Saturday at 10 a.m. in St. Peter’s Square, is expected to draw world leaders including U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The three days of public viewing will conclude Friday evening, after which the casket will be sealed.

The death of Pope Francis initiates a period of transition within the Catholic Church. The College of Cardinals will convene this week to plan the conclave, the secretive process of electing a new pope. The conclave is not expected to begin before May 5th. 135 cardinals under the age of 80 are eligible to vote.

Mourners from around the world have expressed their grief and shared their memories of the Pope, praising his humble style, concern for the poor, and his messages of peace. While beloved by many, his critiques of capitalism and climate change alienated some conservative factions. The selection of his successor will be closely watched.
