**KOCHI, KERALA –** A 17-year-old girl died after falling into the Periyar River in Mudikkal, near Perumbavur, Kerala, on Saturday morning. Her 15-year-old sister was rescued by local residents and taken to a nearby hospital.
The two girls were reportedly taking a morning stroll when the incident occurred around 6:30 AM. Police believe they may have fallen while attempting to take a selfie near the river, as the area is not typically used for walks or swimming.
The deceased, identified as Fathima, was recovered approximately two hours later by a fire and rescue services scuba team. Her sister, Farhath, was pulled from the water by locals before emergency services arrived.
B.C. Joshy, assistant station officer at the Perumbavur fire station, stated that the area lacks safe access points to the river, potentially contributing to the accident. The Perumbavur police have registered a case of unnatural death.
