**Bangkok, April 25, 2025** – China has vehemently denied claims by former US President Donald Trump that the two countries are engaged in active negotiations to reduce tariffs. Chinese officials stated on Thursday that any suggestion of progress in trade talks is unfounded.
Trump had previously asserted that things were going “fine” with China and that tariffs on Chinese exports would be substantially reduced from the current 145%. However, both the Chinese Foreign Ministry and Commerce Ministry spokespersons unequivocally denied any ongoing consultations or negotiations.
Spokespersons emphasized that China is open to dialogue but insists on mutual respect and equality. They stressed that the US must cancel all unilateral tariffs against China as a prerequisite for any meaningful discussion.
This denial comes after Trump imposed 145% tariffs on Chinese imports, prompting retaliatory 125% tariffs from China. While the US offered tariff pauses to other countries, China remained an exception, escalating the conflict by restricting rare earth mineral exports and filing multiple WTO cases.
Despite the ongoing trade war, Trump expressed optimism, suggesting a future of amicable cooperation with Chinese President Xi Jinping. China, however, remains firm in its stance, demanding the complete removal of all US tariffs before any meaningful negotiations can begin.
