Sat Apr 26 01:10:00 UTC 2025: ## Severe Storms Bring Heavy Rain, Hail, and Tornado Threat to South Plains
**LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD)** – A powerful thunderstorm system continues to lash the northwestern South Plains of Texas, prompting a tornado watch until 10 p.m. The storm, which has already produced multiple tornadoes and significant hail – some the size of softballs – has dumped three to five inches of rain in parts of Hockley County.
The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch for Lubbock and surrounding areas, warning of the possibility of a strong tornado. While tornadoes are isolated events, residents within the watch area are urged to prepare for immediate shelter should a warning be issued.
The storm system, which has been severe since early afternoon, is expected to continue producing showers and thunderstorms throughout the night and into Saturday morning. The primary concern remains flooding, due to the intense rainfall. High winds, with gusts up to 75 mph, are also possible.
While the chance of rain and thunderstorms will decrease Saturday afternoon, with highs in the low 70s, the possibility of an afternoon thunderstorm remains. However, the severe weather risk is expected to be lower than Friday.
The current weather pattern is fueled by high humidity, a dry line in eastern New Mexico, and a stationary front across the Panhandle. These weather features are contributing to the intensity and organization of the storms. Residents are advised to monitor weather alerts closely and remain vigilant.
