Narayanan, a renowned historian and former chairman of the Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR), passed away at his residence in Kozhikode this morning at the age of 92. Known for his unwavering convictions and prolific scholarship, Narayanan left an indelible mark on Indian historical narratives.
Narayanan, proficient in ancient South Indian scripts, gained prominence for his rigorous research, particularly his 1996 thesis, “Perumals of Kerala,” which explored the region’s complex political and social landscape from 800 to 1124 AD. His other notable works include “Cultural Symbiosis in Kerala” and “Calicut: The City of Truth Revisited.” He was not afraid to challenge prevailing historical interpretations, often engaging in debates with Marxist historians.
His academic career spanned decades, including leadership roles at Calicut University and the Indian History Congress. He held visiting professorships at universities across the globe, including institutions in London, Moscow, and Tokyo. Beyond academia, Narayanan was actively involved in social movements, advocating for local community development projects.
Born in Ponnani in 1932, Narayanan earned a first-rank in history from the University of Madras and later a Ph.D. from the University of Kerala. He is survived by his wife and two children. The cremation will be held later today. Narayanan’s death marks the loss of a significant figure in Indian historical scholarship.
