Sat Apr 26 03:23:52 UTC 2025: ## Nigeria Massacre: At Least 20 Killed in Zamfara State Gold Mining Village
**Abuja, Nigeria –** At least 20 people were killed and dozens injured in a brutal attack on the village of Gobirawa Chali in Nigeria’s Zamfara state, Amnesty International Nigeria reported. Gunmen, arriving on motorcycles Thursday afternoon, carried out a house-to-house killing spree, targeting a gold mining site and homes, even attacking a mosque. The death toll continues to rise as more bodies are discovered.
While the exact motive remains unclear, the attack is believed to be a reprisal for a successful defense by villagers against a bandit group on Wednesday. A local resident, Rabi’u Bawa, stated the attackers were loyal to notorious bandit Dogo Gide, known for terrorizing the region for months. The incident highlights the ongoing insecurity in Nigeria’s northwestern region, where numerous armed groups exploit limited security presence to conduct attacks. Kidnapping for ransom is a significant source of funding for these groups, further destabilizing the area. Amnesty International emphasizes the constant fear and need for armed escorts experienced by residents due to the frequent attacks. This attack follows a similar incident last December, where at least 50 people were abducted in the Maradun area.
