**Bengaluru, April 26, 2025** – Dr. K. Kasturirangan, a highly respected figure in India’s scientific and educational landscape and former chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), passed away at the age of 84 on April 25th in Bengaluru. His death was confirmed by ISRO, which announced that he passed away peacefully at his residence. A public viewing will be held at the Raman Research Institute on April 27th.

Dr. Kasturirangan led ISRO from 1994 to 2003, overseeing significant advancements in India’s space program. His tenure included the operationalization of the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) and the first successful test flight of the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV). He also played a key role in the development of numerous satellites, including the Bhaskara series, IRS series, and INSAT series, establishing India as a leading player in global space exploration.

Beyond his contributions to ISRO, Dr. Kasturirangan held prominent positions in the Indian government, serving as a member of the Rajya Sabha and the Planning Commission. More recently, he chaired the drafting committee for the National Education Policy 2020 and played a crucial role in shaping the National Curriculum Framework. He also headed a committee on the Western Ghats, offering a more moderate proposal for ecologically sensitive areas compared to previous recommendations.

His career was marked by numerous accolades, including the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Vibhushan. Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered condolences, calling Dr. Kasturirangan a “towering figure” whose “visionary leadership and selfless contribution to the nation will always be remembered.” Dr. Kasturirangan is survived by his two sons. His legacy as a pioneering scientist, influential policymaker, and education reformer will continue to inspire future generations.
