**Phoenix, AZ** – Lori Daybell, already serving a life sentence for the murders of her two children, was found guilty Tuesday of conspiring with her brother to kill her fourth husband, Charles Vallow. A Maricopa County jury reached the verdict after deliberating for a day. Daybell, representing herself, opted not to testify or call witnesses.
The prosecution argued that the July 2019 shooting of Vallow was not self-defense, as Daybell claimed, but a premeditated act motivated by a desire for Vallow’s $1 million life insurance policy and to facilitate her relationship with her current husband, Chad Daybell. Prosecutors presented evidence suggesting Daybell and her brother, Alex Cox (who died months later), invoked twisted religious beliefs, claiming Vallow was possessed and needed to be killed. Text messages between Daybell and Cox, referencing religious texts and the life insurance policy, were key pieces of evidence. One message referenced the Book of Mormon’s Nephi, who was commanded by God to kill.
Maricopa County Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Treena Kay highlighted inconsistencies in the crime scene, arguing it was staged, not a self-defense shooting. Jurors cited the text message evidence as particularly compelling. They reported being unaware of Daybell’s prior convictions for the murders of her children.
Vallow’s family expressed relief at the verdict. Kay Woodcock, Vallow’s sister, stated her desire to move on from the ordeal.
Daybell admitted to several aggravating factors, including the involvement of an accomplice and the emotional and financial harm suffered by the victim’s family. Sentencing will follow a separate trial in Maricopa County where Daybell is accused of conspiring with Cox to kill Brandon Boudreaux, the ex-husband of her niece. Chad Daybell, convicted of murdering the two children and his first wife, is awaiting execution in Idaho. Lori Daybell is already serving a life sentence without parole for the children’s murders.
