Sat Apr 26 04:20:00 UTC 2025: **Veteran Pitcher Jesse Chavez Returns to Atlanta Braves**
ATLANTA, GA (April 23, 2025) – The Atlanta Braves announced today the selection of veteran right-handed pitcher Jesse Chavez from Triple-A Gwinnett. This move comes as the Braves optioned right-hander Nathan Wiles back to Triple-A following his MLB debut last night. To make room for Chavez on the 40-man roster, infielder Nacho Alvarez Jr. was transferred to the 60-day injured list due to a lingering wrist injury sustained during spring training.
Chavez, 41, is no stranger to the Braves organization, having pitched for the team in each of the past five seasons despite signing minor league contracts with other teams (Angels, Cubs, Rangers, and White Sox) in between. This marks his second stint with Atlanta this season. He was previously called up on March 31st, designated for assignment after a short appearance, and quickly re-signed a minor league deal.
In his lone Braves appearance this season, Chavez allowed one run. However, he has performed exceptionally well in Triple-A, pitching 6 1/3 innings of one-run ball with 12 strikeouts and no walks. His return could address the struggles of veteran relievers Enyel De Los Santos and Rafael Montero. Should the Braves ultimately decide to release Chavez again, the cycle of DFA, free agency, and re-signing could repeat itself.
Alvarez, 22, made his MLB debut last year but appeared in only eight games. Considered a top prospect, his 60-day IL stint will keep him sidelined until at least late May.
