Sat Apr 26 01:10:00 UTC 2025: ## Pakistan’s Bilawal Bhutto Threatens Bloodshed Over Indus Waters Treaty Suspension
**NEW DELHI/ISLAMABAD** – Following a recent terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir, India has suspended the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan, triggering a fiery response from Pakistani officials. Former Foreign Minister and Pakistan Peoples Party chief Bilawal Bhutto Zardari issued a stark warning, claiming that halting the flow of Indus River water would result in bloodshed. He further asserted Pakistan’s ownership of the river and its role as the true protector of its civilization.
This follows similar inflammatory statements from Pakistan’s Defense Minister, who also claimed ownership of every drop of Indus water and accused India of unilateral decision-making. Adding fuel to the fire, a video surfaced of Lashkar-e-Taiba chief Hafiz Saeed threatening India, echoing Bhutto’s sentiments and warning of bloodshed if India restricts water flow as a means to damage Pakistan’s economy, specifically targeting the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
India’s suspension of the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty, which governs the sharing of the river’s waters, has raised concerns about potential ramifications for Pakistan, where agriculture relies heavily on Indus waters (80% of irrigation water comes from the treaty). The treaty contributes significantly to Pakistan’s GDP (approximately 25%).
While India’s decision has severe potential consequences for Pakistan, India maintains its right to suspend the treaty under international law, noting that it is not a signatory to the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties. Therefore, any international court ruling would not be binding on India.
