**Kozhikode, Kerala, April 26, 2025** – Dredging work to deepen the Beypore fishing harbour will commence on Saturday, officials announced. A Goa-based company will undertake the ₹5.94 crore project, overseen by the Harbour Engineering department. The operation will remove 95,000 cubic meters of soil, which will be disposed of five kilometers offshore.
The project has been welcomed by fishing boat operators and fishermen, who have long complained about the harbour’s shallow depth hindering larger vessels. However, Karichali Preman, vice president of the All Kerala Fishing Boat Owners Association, cautioned that dredging alone is insufficient. He stated that the association will submit a memorandum to both the Union and State governments requesting further development, including harbour expansion to accommodate the approximately 1,000 boats operating in the area. The lack of space currently forces many boats to anchor elsewhere during monsoon season. The association contends that harbour expansion is the only long-term solution to ensure safe anchoring for all vessels.
