**GUWAHATI, INDIA – April 26, 2025** – Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that anyone in the state found supporting Pakistan, directly or indirectly, will face arrest under the National Security Act (NSA). This follows the arrest of 11 individuals, including All India United Democratic Front (AIDUF) MLA Aminul Islam, for allegedly making anti-India remarks in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack.
Among those arrested were three individuals from southern Assam’s Barak Valley, apprehended for pro-Pakistan posts on social media. Islam was arrested for allegedly linking the Pahalgam attack and the 2019 Pulwama attack to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah. Seven others were arrested on Friday for similar social media posts, with additional arrests made in Tripura and Meghalaya. Those arrested included a journalist, lawyer, university student, and cleric.
Sarma also criticized the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty, calling it a “strategic blunder” by former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. He argued that the treaty unfairly allocated the majority of Indus basin waters to Pakistan, leaving India with significantly less. He praised Prime Minister Modi’s move to initiate India’s withdrawal from the treaty as a reclamation of India’s sovereign rights and a rejection of appeasement. Sarma characterized this as a bold step that targets Pakistan’s economy and corrects a historical injustice.
