Wed Apr 23 10:57:22 UTC 2025: ## US to Phase Out Artificial Food Dyes by 2026
**Washington D.C. -** The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced Tuesday a plan to urge food manufacturers to eliminate petroleum-based artificial colors from the nation’s food supply by the end of 2026. While stopping short of a formal ban, the FDA will rely on voluntary industry cooperation and establish a timeline for switching to natural alternatives. FDA Commissioner Marty Makary stated the agency will revoke authorizations for dyes not currently in production and take action to remove remaining dyes.
The decision follows decades of advocacy from health groups citing concerns about potential links between artificial dyes and neurobehavioral problems in children. While the FDA maintains that approved dyes are safe, the agency recently banned Red 3 due to cancer concerns in lab rats. The move aligns with similar actions in Canada and Europe, where natural substitutes are predominantly used and synthetic colors require warning labels.
Industry response was mixed. Some groups, like the International Dairy Foods Association, pledged voluntary changes, while others expressed concerns about the feasibility and potential supply disruptions of a rapid transition. The International Association of Color Manufacturers argued the proposed timeline ignores scientific evidence and underestimates the complexity of food production.
Critics, including Yale University chronic disease expert Susan Mayne, questioned the focus on artificial dyes over other significant contributors to public health issues. The announcement, however, was welcomed by advocates who see the dyes as serving only a cosmetic purpose and generating profits for food companies. The initiative also aligns with the “Make America Healthy Again” (MAHA) movement. Several states already have laws restricting artificial colors in foods, with some including aggressive timelines for implementation.
