**TIRUCHI, Tamil Nadu, April 25, 2025** – Residents of two tribal hamlets nestled in the foothills of the Kolli Hills in Tamil Nadu are demanding improved road connectivity and regular bus services. Sukkalampatti Kombai and Sukkalampatti villages, home to over 350 families, currently lack direct access to public transportation, forcing residents to walk several kilometers to the nearest bus stop.
The arduous journey, particularly hazardous at night due to the lack of streetlights and the presence of wild animals, disproportionately impacts school children who must walk or cycle long distances daily. The predominantly Scheduled Tribe community relies heavily on agriculture for their livelihoods, with many lacking access to personal vehicles.
Villagers have repeatedly petitioned local authorities for a bus service, suggesting an extension of an existing route or the introduction of mini-bus services. While the Forest Department has reportedly initiated road construction on a 5-km stretch, the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) is yet to confirm whether it will extend bus routes to the villages. The plea for improved infrastructure highlights the ongoing challenges faced by remote communities in accessing basic necessities and essential services.
