**ALAPPUZHA, April 25, 2025** – The Alappuzha district panchayat’s innovative ‘Vithu Gramam’ project has successfully yielded its first paddy harvest. The project, launched to combat a shortage of high-quality paddy seeds in the district, saw the harvesting of 40 tonnes of Manuratna paddy from 20 acres at the Edapon paddy polder in Nooranad grama panchayat. The harvest was inaugurated by district panchayat president K.G. Rajeshwari.
The initiative, included in the 2024-25 annual plan, focuses on seed production adhering to Agriculture Department guidelines. Farmers participating in the registered seed production program are also cultivating the Uma variety of paddy. Officials stated that the project directly addresses a major challenge faced by local paddy farmers: the scarcity of quality seeds. The success of this first phase signals a positive step towards improving paddy cultivation in the Alappuzha district.
