**Quito, Ecuador –** A 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Ecuador early Friday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The quake, which occurred around 7:00 a.m. local time, was felt as far inland as the capital city, Quito. The epicenter was located near Esmeraldas, at a depth of approximately 35 kilometers.
While the tremor was felt by residents, initial reports indicate no significant damage or casualties. Ecuadorian authorities have also confirmed there is no tsunami threat. The country is situated on a highly active seismic zone, where the Nazca and South American tectonic plates meet.
