Thu Apr 24 23:00:00 UTC 2025: ## Kochi’s Water Metro Celebrates Second Anniversary, Eyes Nationwide Expansion

**KOCHI, INDIA (April 25, 2025)** – Kochi’s innovative Water Metro system celebrated its second anniversary today, marking a significant milestone for sustainable and affordable public transport in India. Over the past two years, the system has transported four million commuters across ten terminals in the Greater Kochi area using its fleet of 19 air-conditioned, hybrid-electric ferries.

The project, a first of its kind in India, is spearheaded by the Kerala government and Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL). Initially aiming for 78 ferries across the Greater Kochi area, the Water Metro has already garnered national attention, winning prestigious awards including the Gussies Electric Boat Award-2022 and the Skoch Award.

This success has prompted the Union government to explore the feasibility of replicating the Kochi model in 21 locations across India. KMRL has already submitted a feasibility study for a Mumbai Water Metro to the Maharashtra government and is conducting similar studies for 21 other urban centers across 11 states and two union territories.

Loknath Behera, MD of KMRL, expressed optimism that the Water Metro system will not only provide a sustainable and affordable alternative to road transport but also significantly alleviate traffic congestion. The expansion plans promise to bring this successful model of sustainable urban transport to cities nationwide.
