Fri Apr 25 16:24:04 UTC 2025: **Bengaluru’s BBMP to Transition Under New Governance Act**
**Bengaluru, India (April 25, 2025)** – The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), Bengaluru’s civic body, has officially begun a transition period following the Governor’s assent to the Greater Bengaluru Governance Act (GBGA) 2024. The BBMP will continue to function temporarily while the changes outlined in the new Act are implemented, a process experts estimate will take eight to nine months.
The first major step involves defining the boundaries of the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA), which will significantly expand upon the current BBMP area of 709 sq km. This will be followed by redrawing wards based on updated population data, as the last census was conducted in 2011. V. Ravichandar of the Brand Bengaluru Committee highlights the need for updated census data, suggesting the use of electoral rolls as a proxy for population growth estimations.
The process will also include establishing new corporations, assigning wards, considering revenue allocation for balanced property tax collection, and determining ward reservations for future elections. A draft notification will be issued for public feedback before the final notification, at which point the current BBMP will be dissolved. The Urban Development Department will oversee this transition.
