MANGALURU, INDIA (April 24, 2025) – Environmentalist and artist Dinesh Holla lauded the Kannada translation of renowned environmentalist Madhav Gadgil’s memoir, *A Walk Up The Hill*, during a World Book Day event in Mangaluru. The event, organized by the Mangaluru Chapter of INTACH (Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage), celebrated the release of *Erughattada Nadige*, the Kannada version translated by Sharada Gopal and Nagesh Hegde and published by Akruti Aashaya Publications.
Holla credited Gadgil’s work with halting numerous unregulated projects in the Western Ghats. He emphasized the importance of making such vital environmental literature accessible in local languages to raise awareness about ecological issues. INTACH Mangaluru Convener Subhas Basu highlighted Gadgil’s community engagement and the enduring value of books. Kallur Nagesh of Akruti Aashaya Publications noted the positive reception of the Kannada translation, countering the perception of declining readership. Retired principal Krishnamurthy shared anecdotes about Gadgil’s early life, emphasizing his lifelong love of reading and knowledge, fostered by his grandfather’s extensive library. The event concluded with a discussion on Gadgil’s philosophy and critique of unsustainable development, led by journalist Jayant Kodkani.
