Tue Apr 22 15:28:12 UTC 2025: ## Mysuru Celebrates Zero Shadow Day with Hands-on Experiments

**Mysuru, Karnataka, April 23, 2025** – The Cosmology Education and Research Training Center (COSMOS) in Mysuru, part of the Indian Institute of Astrophysics, marked Zero Shadow Day (ZSD) on Tuesday with a series of engaging activities. The event, held at Vignana Bhavan in Manasagangotri, featured a lecture on the science behind ZSD, followed by hands-on experiments and demonstrations.

Participants, guided by the IIA’s SCOPE team, measured shadow lengths using Gnomons (Shanku Yantra) to observe the phenomenon firsthand. The zero shadow was observed precisely at 12:22 PM. Other demonstrations included viewing sunspots and calculating the sun’s declination.

Zero Shadow Day occurs twice a year at locations between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn, when the sun is directly overhead. COSMOS explained that due to the Earth’s axial tilt, the sun’s position varies, leading to different ZSD dates for different locations. Mysuru experienced ZSD on April 22nd and will again on August 19th. The event concluded with a question-and-answer session.
