**Washington D.C.** – India and the United States are set to hold crucial trade talks in Washington D.C. from April 23rd for three days. These discussions follow previous trade disputes, notably the global market turmoil caused by tariffs imposed by former President Trump, which resulted in substantial financial losses and widespread international criticism. While Trump later delayed these tariffs, the issue remains a focus of ongoing negotiations.
The upcoming talks aim to finalize a comprehensive trade agreement encompassing approximately 19 sectors, including goods, services, investments, and customs procedures. The potential agreement could boost bilateral trade to $500 billion. Both sides express optimism about the talks’ success.
A high-level Indian delegation, led by Additional Secretary Rajesh Agarwal, will participate in the discussions. The agreement is expected to involve tariff reductions on various products, with the US potentially lowering tariffs on electric vehicles, industrial goods, wine, dairy, petrochemicals, apples, and alfalfa. India, in turn, may offer concessions on textiles, gems, jewelry, leather goods, chemicals, plastics, shrimp, oilseeds, and horticultural products. The positive relationship between Prime Minister Modi and President Biden is seen as contributing to a conducive environment for these negotiations.
