BHOPAL, INDIA – A top Congress leader in Madhya Pradesh, Chintu Choukse, is in judicial custody following his arrest on charges of attempted murder. Congress leaders allege the arrest is politically motivated, a claim vehemently denied by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Choukse, a Congress councillor in the Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC), was arrested Sunday after a brawl with a BJP worker, Kapil Pathak, on Saturday night. Pathak sustained head injuries and filed a complaint alleging attempted murder. Police arrested Choukse and another man.
Madhya Pradesh Congress in-charge Harish Chaudhary and president Jitu Patwari visited Choukse in prison and accused the BJP of using its power to silence opposition voices. They claim the attempted murder charges are fabricated, citing Choukse’s recent questioning of alleged corruption within the IMC, including irregularities in a Rs 2,000 crore payment and inflated costs for the Indore metro project.
Patwari stated that the fight was “deliberately started” and that Choukse was only trying to resolve the situation. He emphasized the lack of visual evidence supporting the attempted murder charges. The Congress pledged to fight Choukse’s case both legally and through public protests. The BJP has yet to officially respond to these accusations.
