**New Delhi, April 22, 2025** – The Indian Union Labour Ministry has issued a nationwide directive urging states and union territories to implement measures protecting workers from extreme heatwaves. Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya announced the initiative, stating that letters have been sent to Chief Secretaries and Administrators outlining necessary steps.

The ministry recommends a multi-sectoral approach including adjusted work hours, improved access to water and cooling facilities, regular health checks, and provision of heatstroke prevention materials, particularly for construction workers. Mines and factories are advised to consider slower work paces, flexible schedules, and improved ventilation.

Minister Mandaviya highlighted the expansion of the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) services under the Modi government, from 393 districts in 2014 to 691 currently. He also announced the in-principle approval for ten new ESIC medical colleges across India. The Labour Ministry will also conduct awareness programs on heatwave prevention.
